Hello, FOSS Fairgoers!

The final details for FOSS Fair (food, nametags, etc. etc.) are
falling into place, and I for one am incredibly excited about all the
great sessions we're sure to have.

When: Saturday, March 1, 2013, 9 AM - 5 PM
Where: Engineering Building II, east side (CSC)
Wiki: https://opensource.ncsu.edu/FossFair2014

I would just like to remind everyone that we are still in need of
volunteers to help make FOSS Fair a success. We have plenty of people
to help with setup before the Fair and cleanup after, but we still
need volunteers to help us serve and clean up breakfast and lunch.

In addition, we are especially in need of monitors - volunteers who
hang out in the halls during the Fair to give people directions,
answer questions, report any unusual events, and make sure that the
building stays clean and safe. You will have to be at the Fair at 8:30
for a briefing, but after that, we're flexible about who's on duty
when - so if you see a talk you really want to hear, you can swap
shifts with someone else, no problem.

If you want to volunteer, put your name on the spreadsheet at
http://go.ncsu.edu/n1cxbz, and we'll email you back with any relevant
details. And as always, if you have any questions, email
linux-users-group@ncsu.[redacted].

See you at the Fair!

Thanks,
Matthew Frazier

Hello LUG Steering Committee,

I'm not able to create an user account at

https://opensource.ncsu.edu/

because I'm getting

[Errno 27] File too large:
'/afs/unity/web/l/linux/configs/opensource/data/user/1393592854.88.8516'

I can send you the whole trace back if it will be helpful.

Sorry for cross-posting, I'm not sure which list is more appropriate at
this point.

I was going to offer a session:

Vaclav Petras

Open source at NCSU OSGeoREL

Open source for geospatial, 30 years of GRASS GIS development, finding
contributors, Google Summer of Code and why open source in academia anyway?

See you hopefully very soon,
Vasek [Vashek]

Hello, Vasek,

We've been having all sorts of wiki problems lately. I'm not actually
sure who is in charge of opensource.ncsu.edu now, so I don't know how
to fix it. But don't worry - you can still give a session even if it's
not registered on the wiki. Nothing about the schedule is final until
the day of the Fair.

Thanks,

Hello, everyone!

FOSS Fair is tomorrow! The LUG and our friends at the University have
put a lot of time and energy into getting it organized, so we're
excited that tomorrow's the day!

When: Saturday, March 1, 2013, 9 AM - 5 PM
(Sign-in opens at 8:30 AM)
Where: Engineering Building II, east side (CSC)
Wiki: https://opensource.ncsu.edu/FossFair2014
(Directions and parking information included)

Right now, 114 people are signed up, and we know of about 10 session
proposals (some of them didn't quite make it to the wiki). If you
didn't make the lunch deadline, but you still want to come, go ahead!

It's also not too late to come up with a session idea! Some of my best
presentations were made up the night before. And if you're not sure
you can speak for a full hour about a topic, this year we're going to
cut some of the paper in half for 30-minute sessions. We may also
organize some "lightning talk" sessions, where we split the sessions
into quick, on-the-spot 5-minute talks about a particular theme.

See you tomorrow!

Matthew Frazier

Hello, LUGgers!

FOSS Fair was fun! But, because we spent all our time preparing for
that, I don't really have time to organize a proper LUG meeting for this
Tuesday. (We've already used our "cop-out" meeting topic for this
semester.) Fortunately, another great local group, TriPython, is having
a Python Project Night we can crash. In the words of Chris Calloway,
TriPython's organizer:

"Have a project you want to show off, share, seek help with, or just get
some work done surrounded by like minded Python lovers? Join us for our
monthly project night and do just that! Don't have something to work on?
Just need some help with Python? Show up and enjoy the energy, sprint on
an open source project, find something interesting to contribute to or
be inspired by! The setting is informal and there is no schedule, so
don't worry if you show up past the start time. Whether you are a Python
newbie needing help or have an open source project you want to share,
come hang out and hack."

When: Tuesday, March 4th, 6 PM - unknown end time
Where: WebAssign: 1791 Varsity Drive, Suite 200, on Centennial Campus

I know a lot of LUGgers work with or are interested in learning Python,
so this will be a good opportunity to network with area Pythonistas --
TriPython is always enthusiastic about helping people learn the language
and get involved in the community. We hope to see you there!

Subject: [TriLUG-announce] Mar 13th Meeting: Ansible
Message-ID: <5314C163.1050405@ncsu.[redacted]>

Topic: Docker
Presenter: Vincent Batts
When: Thursday, 13th March 2014, 7pm (pizza from 6.45pm)
Where: NC State Engineering Building II Room 1021, Centennial Campus
Parking: The parking decks and Oval Drive street parking are free after 5pm
Link: http://trilug.org/2014-03-13/docker

Abstract:
What is docker (https://docker.io), and how can it help me?

Linux containers are self-sufficient ways to deploy isolated
applications for testing, developing, or running applications at scale.
Come for a workshop on how to leverage this technology for more robust
continuous integration, and developing/deploying across a diverse
landscape of distributions.

We'll go over the fundamentals:
* Building a image for your application (if you're not a developer, that
is ok :-)
* Wiring up that image for your use case
* Shipping that image (or even publishing it for others)

Feel free to bring your questions on docker-based solutions!

Bio:
Vincent Batts is a Senior Software Engineer at Red Hat. He has
specialized in content delivery to customers, and more recently joined
the Openshift team. Vincent's years of Linux and open-source
involvement, including development work on Slackware and Fedora, have
lead to exciting new opportunities with OpenShift and the docker community.

Hello, LUGgers!

In order to celebrate the amazing weather tomorrow, we're having a
cookout, barbecue, or whatever your preferred term is tomorrow evening!
We'll have hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, cantaloupe, and other
food and beverage!

When: Tuesday, March 10, 2014, at 7:00 PM
Where: Sha`Bren's house in Clayton

Since Clayton is a pretty significant distance away, I'm filling a
minivan with people to take to the cookout! I still have two seats open,
so contact me at <mlfrazie@ncsu.[redacted]> if you need a ride, or hop into the
#ncsulug IRC channel. We'll leave campus around 6:00 or 6:30 PM, from a
location to be determined. You can also get Sha`Bren's address from me.
(I don't want to leave his address in a publicly available mailing list
archive.)

Hope to see you there! Though if you're on Spring Break, hope you're
having fun! (And we will probably have another cookout at some point, so
don't worry if you're missing this one for break.)

Thanks,
Matthew Frazier
